Travel Resources

Below you’ll find my personal go-to tools for booking flights, finding lodging, renting cars, and planning safe, smooth trips. These are geared more toward an international sense, so if there is a region-specific resource, it will likely be in that region’s guide. Looking for resources in a country that I haven’t completed a guide for yet? Send me a message and I will do my best to help you find what you’re looking for! I only recommend resources I use myself. In the future, some of these may include affiliate links, which help support the site at no extra cost to you.

Booking

  • Google Flights – a great place to start gauging prices on your flights
  • Skyscanner – compare flights across dozens of airlines
  • Seats.aero – a bit more of a niche pic to see flights for those of you interested in using miles
  • DiscoverCars.com – affordable car rentals in most countries around the world
  • Rentalcars.com – affordable car rentals in most countries around the world
  • Booking.com – a little bit of everything: accommodations, car rentals, and flights in one place
  • Expedia – a little bit of everything: accommodations, car rentals, and flights in one place
  • Airbnb a good resource for when you need a more specialized location or accommodation
  • Hostelworld for the budget-minded traveler who wants affordable accommodation

Birding and Travel Gear

  • B&H – offering a range of optics, from binoculars to anything photography related
  • REI anything you could in the field of outdoor gear
  • Backcountry.com – anything you could in the field of outdoor gear
  • Osprey specializes in packs, and a personal favorite of mine
  • Decathlon offers a wide-range of sporting goods, including many great outdoor products
  • Amazon anything and everything you could need, best used for any miscellaneous products needed

Maps

  • Google Maps – can get you from point A to B in most countries really well, along with the ability to download offline maps and store locations
  • Gaia Maps has the ability to store offline maps and also has generally more detailed trail marking and marked location abilities than Google Maps

Identification Resources

  • eBird – a must-use for bird research ahead of time
  • Merlin one of the best apps for bird ID internationally
  • Bookshop.org a good starting place to find any field guides
  • Thriftbooks –  a great place to find second-hand field guides at affordable prices

This is not meant to be a final list, as I will be adding to it. Whether you’re planning your first birding trip or your fiftieth, I hope they help you explore confidently and comfortably. Have a favorite tool or app you use on your trips? Let me know at keane@borderlessbirding.com!
